Shallow-Water Vibro-Coring System for Archaeological, Geological and Environmental Investigations

A specialized mechatronic system developed and validated for sediment core recovery in shallow marine environments, overcoming the operational limitations of conventional underwater drilling equipment. Designed for deployment from a small research vessel with diver assistance, the system enables sediment sampling at water depths of approximately 5–10 m, with a working penetration depth of up to 2 m.

The system integrates a 2 m coring tube with a transparent liner, a cutting head, and a pneumatic vibro-impact mechanism. Its compact design and diver-assisted operation allow flexible deployment in confined shallow-water areas and under varying sedimentary conditions, making it suitable for archaeological, geological, and environmental research.

By providing direct access to the vertical sediment sequence, the system enables the investigation of sediment composition, stratigraphy, and buried archaeological or geological features.
